Course description

Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale, and will contribute to improvements in health, computer function, environmental management, cleaner and greener processes, and energy use. It is also expected to provide sophisticated sensors for detecting chemicals at low concentrations with applications in biological systems and enable biologists to manipulate biological processes within cells.

This double degree structure has been chosen as nanotechnology requires knowledge of a broad range of supporting sciences and the time to develop this knowledge. Key features of the course include:

- Six specialist units in nanotechnology: Nanochemistry, scanning probe microscopes, imaging and materials characterisation, synchrotron science and technology, nanomaterials and fabrication, and sensors and devices
- A unique seminar program: Issues in Nanotechnology - leading practitioners present on all aspects of nanotechnology
- A major nanotechnology research project in the final year
- Streams of study in either nanostructured materials or bionanotechnology.

Middle Band

Applicants who have successfully completed Physics and Specialist Mathematics will be deemed to have an ENTER 1.5 points higher per study.

Extra requirements

Non Year 12 students may complete the VTAC Pi form. Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) forms are also available from VTAC and the Faculty.
Prerequisites

VCE (or equivalent) Units 3 & 4 with a minimum study score of 25 in each of English (any), Chemistry and Mathematical Methods (either) and a study score of at least 20 in one of Specialist Mathematics or Physics.

Students will be fully qualified for employment in a wide range of science-based industries and research laboratories and will also be able to participate in the emerging nanotechnology industries.
Nanotechnology is a developing area with a growing number of organisations such as the Defence, Science & Technology Organisation (DSTO) and various groups within CSIRO seeking people with experience in this field. Companies are moving to exploit the emerging technologies and opportunities for employment are available in both Australia and internationally.
Professional recognition

Graduates with this degree will be eligible for accreditation with the Australian Institute of Physics and the Royal Australian Chemical Society, depending on the electives undertaken.
