The integrated science minor offered through the Department of Biology/Chemistry is designed for students certifying to teach elementary. It is intended to include essential elements of the Michigan Curriculum Framework Science Benchmarks in their academic content area settings. Each of the component courses is expected to demonstrate not only the concepts necessary for understanding and teaching the benchmarks, but also to demonstrate the integration of the particular discipline with other scientific fields. Beyond this, each course is also expected to show applications of the discipline in daily life.

Integrated Science
Program Description:
This program includes either
training for elementary level
teacher certification with a major in
integrated science, or an elementary
teaching minor in integrated
science, or an approved secondary
teaching major leading to Michigan
Teacher certification in Integrated
Science (program code DI).
Elementary teachers will hold full
elementary certification for self
contained classrooms, as well as
qualification to teach all science
subjects in the middle school.
Secondary teacher certification
enables the candidate to teach
biology, chemistry, Earth/space
science, life science, physics and
physical science in grades 6-12.
Contact the School of Education for
more information.
Candidates completing the
secondary program are not required
to have a minor in addition to
this major. The Comprehensive
(5-year) program includes student
teaching as a requirement within
the bachelor’s degree.
Candidates
Minor
Six or 7 credits are required for the minor. One of these is a required introductory course, and the remaining 5 or 6 are to be distributed across three different disciplines as described subsequently.
In addition to fulfilling these breadth requirements, students must indicate one cognitive science field in which they have substantial depth of preparation. Such depth can be documented by completion of at least four courses from within a cognitive science discipline (even if some of those courses are not directly related to cognitive science). Alternative curricular and extracurricular ways of fulfilling the depth requirement may be discussed with
Course Descriptions
ACT 107 Introduction to Actuarial Science (1)
An introduction to and overview of the field of actuarial science. Field trips and guest speakers will be key elements to this course. Students will be investigating the field of actuarial science. (Offered in spring.)
ACT 385 Practicum in Actuarial Science (4)
Significant working or participatory experience in the field of actuarial science. Approval will be given only if there is evidence of significant new learning opportunities related to actuarial science. Credit assumes 40 hours of non-repetitive experience for each of the 4 credits. The practicum requires two supervisors: a work supervisor and an academic
The minor in cognitive science has been developed to guide the programs of those who are interested in the interdisciplinary study of the mind, brain, and language, with emphases on formal structure, biological information processing, and computation. The Cognitive Science Program is designed to emphasize guided breadth across various disciplines that contribute to cognitive science as well as depth within a chosen discipline.
A student may have many reasons for deciding to minor in cognitive science. Perhaps the simplest is to indicate and explore a particular interest in cognitive science. Whatever your major, a minor in cognitive science indicates a kind
