Exercise Science at Skidmore College
The mission of Skidmore’s Exercise Science program is to study and expand the relationship among physical activity, nutrition, and human health. Exercise Science course work and research emphasize an understanding of the effects of acute and chronic exercise on human function, health, and the physiological and biochemical mechanisms that underlie the responses and adaptations to exercise. Bolstering the Exercise Science curriculum is a commitment to physical fitness, health promotion, and disease prevention. The Skidmore Exercise Science faculty are committed to furthering the discipline and student comprehension by utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to conduct college-wide, regional, national, and internationally visible research, while maintaining important affiliations with many scientific and professional organizations. Exercise Science (EXSC)
The Exercise Science program prepares students for entry-level master degree programs in physical therapy. An interdisciplinary approach is applied to this major, including classes in:
Nutrition
Psychology
Biology
Physics
Chemistry
Athletic Training
The courses meet or exceed the prerequisites for the majority of physical therapy schools. Students are encouraged to volunteer service in all aspects of physical therapy before and during their undergraduate studies. Academic advisers monitor student progress to maximize acceptance in physical therapy schools.
Exercise and movement science is a program within the Rehabilitation and Movement Science Department of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Students majoring in exercise and movement science will explore the theory and application of exercise and movement sciences in health, fitness and prevention and how that translates into a variety of populations. Students may elect to choose an academic minor to tailor their education to their individual objectives and goals, although a minor is not required.
Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science
The exercise science program gives students a strong foundation in knowing that human life and all its intricacies are a revealed gift from the creative hand of God. This program explores human movement and its effects on the body with a focus on stewardship of what God has entrusted.
The undergraduate Exercise Science major is designed to prepare a student for a career in exercise programming and supervision for individuals or groups across the lifespan. It does not require a minor area of study, however, many students choose to pursue minors in related areas such as biology, chemistry, business, food and nutrition, or health sciences. A wide range of electives are included allowing students to prepare for a variety of careers or graduate programs in Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Cardiac Rehabilitation, or Sports Psychology.

Southeast’s exercise science program offers you the chance to work with state-of-the-art equipment in our 1,400-square-foot Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
Our exercise science faculty are committed to involving undergraduate and graduate students in research activities. Overview
The undergraduate Exercise Science program has a science-based curriculum that provides a broad background for students planning to further their education at the graduate level. The program emphasizes these primary disciplines: anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sport psychology, and motor leaning/control. Students complete specified course work within HPER as well as a rigorous curriculum in areas such as anatomy, chemistry, mathematics, physics, physiology, and psychology.
