Dairy Science degree at Louisiana State University

PROGRAMS IN DAIRY SCIENCE
LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

The Department of Dairy Science offers areas of concentration in Dairy Production and Dairy Foods Technology. Dairy production deals with all aspects of milk production, including dairy cattle nutrition, genetics, reproductive physiology, herd health and farm management. Dairy Foods Technology includes dairy product formulation and processing, quality assurance, marketing and distribution of the final product to the consumer. Both programs offer a solid educational background by requiring applied courses in the major area and general education requirements which include courses in communication skills, social sciences, humanities, mathematics, chemistry, and biological sciences.

Through selection of approved and free electives, the dairy science program has the flexibility and breadth that allow students to gain a strong knowledge of dairy science while developing skills in related areas. Many students select courses related to animal and feed biotechnology, food processing, or communication. Students with interest in management, marketing or sales careers can select courses in agricultural economics, management, finance, marketing, etc.

Students interested in Veterinary Medicine can complete the required courses for admission as part of the degree requirements in Dairy Science and can participate in the 3 + 1 (Pre-Veterinary Medicine) program. This program allows students admitted into the School of Veterinary Medicine after three years (102 hours) in Dairy Science to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree following completion of the first year in the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Students Interested in Science and Technology Area of Concentration can request academic advising in the Department of Dairy Science for academic advising.
