Welcome to the Cognitive Science Program
In the last 30 years, research has surged in cognition affecting many fields including psychology, linguistics, philosophy, computing science, education, anthropology, communications, and sociology. The greatest impact within psychology has been the sub-fields of psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, and developmental psychology; within philosophy, on philosophy of language, philosophical logic, and philosophy of mind; within linguistics, on semantics, syntax, phonology, and phonetics; and within computing science, on artificial intelligence.

The Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology (formerly, the School of Kinesiology), will be moving to the Faculty of Science. This is an exciting opportunity for the School of Kinesiology because:
1. their orientation and prespective is similar to other science disciplines;
2. the undergraduate program course content is science intensive;
3. there are opportunities for research and teaching collarboration especially with Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and Biological Sciences.
The Department of Earth Sciences is a relatively new academic unit in the Faculty of Science. It was established as a Program in 1995 and was granted full departmental status in September, 1999.
The initial conception of the Department of Earth Sciences is that it would function around a traditional geology core, have a teaching and research focus on environmental geology, and provide a program of Earth Sciences courses that would allow SFU students to register as professional geoscientists (P.Geo) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC). An introduction to the science of the mind from the perspective of cognitive psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. The course introduces students to the scientific investigation of such questions as the following: What does it mean to think or to have consciousness? Can a computer have a mind? What does it mean to have a concept? What is language? What kinds of explanations are necessary to explain cognition?
1 credit.

The minor in cognitive science has been developed to guide the programs of those who are interested in the interdisciplinary study of the mind, brain, and language, with emphases on formal structure, biological information processing, and computation. The Cognitive Science Program is designed to emphasize guided breadth across various disciplines that contribute to cognitive science as well as depth within a chosen discipline.
